DIVE LOG JUNE 2025 issue 412

Huge 100 year old Black Coral tree on the Perseus.

The SS Perseus is a colossal wreck; our two dives did not do it justice that day, so we vowed to make another trip. And yes, there are goodies to be found everywhere on this wreck…the propeller is a bronze four-blader, each blade some 8ft tall, bloody huge, a good 6 tons of scrap metal there, and child play to remove. The Perseus was a steel steamship of 6,725 tons. She was built in 1908 and owned by the Ocean Steamship Co., Ltd. On Feb 21 1917, she struck a mine laid by the German commerce raider SMS Wolf and sank some 25 km west of Colombo, with the loss of three of her crew. I would encourage any diver visiting Colombo in the right season to take the opportunity to do a couple of drops on this magnificent wreck.
