The Artistry of Marine Life: A Painter’s Perspective As an artist who paints marine life, my work is a vivid exploration of the oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. From vibrant coral reefs, tropical island paradise and all the elusive marine marvels of the sea. One of my favourite subjects and a most popular marine animal is the sea turtle. Dolphins have had their day and it is now definitly the turtle era ! I saw an advertisement in Dive Log for Wakatobi Resort of a sea turtle and used it as a reference for my first painting, then not long after I booked a trip to Wakatobi and showed them my painting , well they were so chuffed they gave me a $400 resort credit for my stay ! Thanks guys. From then on, I ventured into painting surfboards. These have proved very popular. Two have even have been shipped to America. I especially love to do split shot scenes, with the island above and the reef underneath using inspiration from Lady Elliot and Heron islands and the Great Barrier Reef. I also have the support of the Coldstream Gallery located in Ulmarra who exhibit my art and underwater photography. Marine life painting is not merely an artistic endeavour; it is a profound connection to the natural world. The ocean, with its vastness and mystery, offers endless inspiration. By portraying its inhabitants, I strive to evoke a sense of wonder and raise awareness about the importance of preserving these fragile environments. I have entered in art shows where I won best in show at the Wooli Art Show last year with a surfboard that depicted the environment from the Daintree Rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef. My latest endeavour is a surfboard for World Oceans Day with a whale holding up the world with it’s tail. The process begins with observation and underwater photography; understanding the subject is crucial. This knowledge informs the accuracy and authenticity of the artwork. The ocean faces numerous threats, including pollution, overfishing and climate change. Through my art, I aim to highlight these issues and inspire action. Each painting is a call to protect the marine world, ensuring that its beauty endures for generations to come. I hope my art makes you smile and takes you into the underwater world.
