DIVERS IN ADVERTISING - AN HISTORICAL PICTORIAL (Part 2)
I n the June issue of DIVE LOG I featured some of the images from my “divers in advertising” collection, so here are a few more. Because of the courageous achievements and the novelty of divers during most of the 20th century, divers and the underwater world held the public’s admiration. So, just as our sports stars today successfully advertise and promote consumer products, divers were also featured in advertisements to grab attention.
Alcohol and tobacco were the products featured most in diving illustrated advertising, until a media ban on the promotion of tobacco products was introduced. Advertising agencies produced diver related magazine advertisements promoting automobiles, life insurance, drinking cocoa, home insurance, tyres, whiskey, beer, soft drinks and even Playboy magazine. In 1973, divers posed with the latest model Chevrolet Camero. Just what you need, a brand-new car loaded up with salty diving gear! In 1967, Coppertone sun-tan products ran an advertising campaign in Playboy magazine. Large railways posters are still prevalent on today’s railway
