The Freediving Experience in Port Phillip Bay A s far back as I can remember, I have always loved the ocean—the power of the waves and the serenity of the water. Walking along the beach, exploring rock pools at low tide, and, of course, snorkelling. I could spend hours floating on the surface, observing a world so unique, balanced, peaceful and so different from ours. :: written and images by VADIM BELAKHOV from surface to depth

Living in Melbourne, we are fortunate to have Port Phillip Bay as our doorstep. The bay is a large, semi-enclosed body of water bordered by the city of Melbourne to the north and the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas to the south. It's a vital part of Victoria's marine environment, offering a rich and diverse ecosystem. The bay is connected to the Southern Ocean through a narrow channel known as The Rip. This connection ensures a constant exchange of water, flow of nutrients and supports a vibrant marine eco-system. Port Phillip Bay is home to a stunning variety of marine life, and I quickly found myself wanting to see more of it. However, being a snorkeller has its limitations, and I quickly realised that to see more, I needed to learn to freedive! Freediving, also known as breath-hold diving, is a form of underwater exploration where you rely solely on holding

your breath. Unlike scuba diving, which involves carrying heavy tanks, regulators and other equipment, freediving allows you to move freely and connect with the underwater world on a more natural level. Freediving requires breath control, relaxation, and physical fitness in-turn offering a unique and intimate way to experience the ocean. About four years ago, I decided to learn to freedive. The sport is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide with Melbourne no exception. We’re lucky to have several highly professional and reputable freediving trainers catering to all levels. I highly recommend attending and completing a freediving course. From the very beginning of my freediving journey, I was guided by true professionals from “Drifters Freediving” (https://driftersfreediving.com/). During the course, you'll learn essential techniques such as equalisation, relaxation, and much more. Importantly, you'll also gain the knowledge needed to enjoy the sport safely.
