DIVE LOG Australasia
Mysteries of the
Green Turtle article by JOHN MAGEE photos by CATHIE CUMMINS
Hey I can hold my breath for 45 mins can you?
I t could be the golden sands of the Caribbean or a coral cay with land nowhere to be seen in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. The water is glassy, the wind is barely blowing, and the moon is bright in the sky. A glance down to the sand and it begins to move. Suddenly a tiny, prehistoric looking scaled eye appears and takes in the outside world for the first time. It is not a dinosaur but may as well be. This baby green sea turtle’s ancestors have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, almost 110 million years; and have changed very little in that time. 44 DIVE LOG Australasia #408 - October ‘24
