The sunrays gleam through the suface above this blacktip reef shark, Carcharhinus melanopterus.

Gray reef sharks patrol outside.

The cleaner does not hesitate.

Deeper down is a shark cleaning station. From above you can watch the sharks hold themselves in the current while cleaner wrasses work across their bodies. Occasionally a shark opens its mouth and the little fish swim inside.

Both understand the arrangement.

Inside the caverns the light changes.

You move through shadow and brilliant windows of Pacific blue. Soldierfish crowd beneath ledges. Moray eels watch from holes.

There is something unsettling about watching a small fish voluntarily swim between a shark’s teeth.

Our guide stopped above a clump of eel grass and pointed.

The shark does not eat it.
