Snorkelling Queen presents ... A lesser known North Coast

by Melissa Senatoa photos from Forster Dive T hink North Coast and the imagination typically leaps to sun-splashed shores of places such as Byron or Coffs. However, the relatively unsung coast surrounding Forster and Tuncurry – about a three and a half hour drive north of Sydney - is replete with the spectacular scenery and brilliant blue waters typically associated with coastal idylls much further north.

Beaches here unfurl powdery white sand and many are fringed with lush littoral rainforest. The densely forested hinterland is speckled with rustic charms – perfect for an afternoon drive when the wind picks up on the coast. Although I moved to this region several years ago, there’s still so much I haven’t gotten around to. For an aquatic- focused long weekend, you’re

rather spoiled for choice. There’s a lot to ogle at underwater, thanks to the combination of healthy rocky reefs, diverse marine life and uncrowded sites. Blue gropers, turtles, wobbegong sharks, several types of rays and dense schools of fish are just some of the species to look forward to.
