On one of my rest days, I took the scooter and set out to explore the island, and this is where having one really makes a difference. Within a single day, I was able to see just how varied Fuvahmulah is. It is not just reefs and open ocean; the landscape shifts quickly from coastline to dense greenery, from quiet lakes to small pockets of history, all within a short ride. One of the first stops was Thoondu Beach, which
feels completely different from the typical Maldivian shoreline. Instead of soft sand, the beach is covered in smooth white pebbles, giving it a distinct look and sound underfoot as the waves roll in. Moving inland, the island reveals something even more unusual for the Maldives: freshwater ecosystems.
