411 Dive Log Australasia April 2025

One of the many vertical wall dives to found in the Coral Sea.

While Osprey is part of Australia and protected within the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve, shark feeding is permitted and is an exciting experience you must do at least once. This carefully organised feed is conducted at specifically chosen location on ‘North Horn’. The feed attracts over 50 plus Grey, White and Black Tipped Reef Sharks and a moderately large Potato Cod who is not afraid to mix it with the sharks for the food. Divers can get fantastic close-up photographs and video of the action as sharks circle the bait waiting for its release. And we do mean close-up. Here on

Fans decorating the walls. The ever present reef sharks and Barracuda cruise the deep. False Entrance is where Terry photographed that striking image of Cathie in a large school of Big Eye Trevally for the August 2023 cover of DiveLog. On another dive at False Entrance the crew hilariously advised us that a 4m Scallop Headed Hammerhead Shark swam between us while we had our heads poked under a ledge looking for nudibranchs. The things you miss when your mind is somewhere else! The top of the reef is a perfect place for a safety stop with an amazing variety of marine life such as a massive variety of coral, ‘Pipefish’, “Gobies’, Blennies, Parrot Fish, numerous Chaetodons and ‘Nemos’ to keep your attention.

one occasion Terry found a shark more interested in his camera set-up than the bait. Quite a significant impact but luckily no personal injury, leaks or scratches on his dome port. Following the shark feed and when your adrenalin has returned to normal, divers are commonly offered another dive at North Horn where several sharks and lots of small fish remain to hunt for scraps from the feed. However, most divers opt for a tender drop and 500m plus drift dive along West Wall. Here Giant Hump Head Wrasse, Batfish, schools of Barracuda, Tuna, Grey and White Tipped Reef sharks and the occasional Tiger Shark, Whale Shark and Manta Rays can be encountered, but
