Engage With Your Subject To Allow Your Subject To Engage With You
Frequently I am asked how many Good Pictures do I like to achieve on a dive.
My answer : None, I want to achieve One Great Image per dive and sometimes I surface after shooting nothing. It’s simply that I always challenge myself as an image maker and sometimes on a dive I don’t encounter something that inspires me enough. But that’s how it is with photography. It’s 10% luck and 90% just being there! My approach with Marine life or Africa Wildlife is, don’t shoot unless your camera is pointed at something exciting or shoot the subjects in an inspiring way. Photo Hints : To succeed at this, one must locate a subject with potential and most importantly stay engaged with it as long as possible to allow the subject to present an inspiring moment or give you time for your creative mind to kick in!
In this example, at some point as I remained committed to this process my subject engaged with me beautifully. Great image achieved! Image by Kevin Deacon. Location : Seraya, Bali, Indonesia. Genre : Close Up Fish Photography. Photography Data : Nikon D200 with Nikkor 60mm Macro Lens. Seacam Housing and twin Seacam strobes. ISO 100. I/125 Second @ F22 Interesting Facts : The image has been cropped to 16 x 9 Widescreen which suits viewing on current Wide Screen TVs and Laptops. This is common display use these days and more photographers should crop images to suit such image use.
